History

The Sun Devil Criterium has a long history with ASU Cycling going back to the first years of the club, which was founded in 1985. The race was hosted in various locations in its early years, largely due to continuing development on the ASU Tempe campus and the conversion of roads into malls without car access. After having hosted the Sun Devil Criterium in the ASU Research Park for a decade, where it was called the Sun Devil Classic for two years (2013-14) when ASU Cycling co-organized the event with Strada Racing Club, ASU Cycling decided to try and bring this ASU tradition back to the ASU Tempe campus. Iconic Gammage Auditorium was identified as the perfect venue, offering a safe and fast course with plenty of excellent spectating opportunities. Bringing in the Tempe Sister Cities as co-organizers for the 2016 edition of the race, ASU Cycling is looking forward to growing the Sun Devil Criterium presented by ClippedIn.bike over the next years.
